  Obviously anesthesia is not for all. Nursing and Medicine are relatively very stressful professions but anesthesia is close to the top of the stressful specialties. I have had a number of friends in anesthesia leave the field because of the stress, or they became addicted to anesthetic drugs or alcohol, or two actually died from drug overdoses. I in fact had to take several months after my second divorce to figure out it it was worth going back into anesthesia. That was over 7 years ago now. I'm glad I faced my demons and returned. It's been the best seven years of my life by the Grace of God. But now I truly look forward to the day when I retire from anesthesia.

  I encourage you to press on with your education while you are still young. ICU experience is hard to beat and puts you in good standing for any future advancement whether it's academic or in management. Any future employer recognizes ICU experience as valuable. If you like it you may choose to become a CRNA. Or you may invent something like the Personal Belongings Case and start a company like my sister and I.
