Virginian Pilot April 27 2008 Dr. Gott/Your Health - Dear Dr. Gott, I have had toenail fungus for 15 years. It has spread in all toes despite my attempts to cure it. I used tea tree oil for about six months with no change, iodine for four weeks with little change and soaking my nails in Listerine nightly for six to eight weeks with no change. I have used Vicks twice now, the first time for six months with change only to one toe that didn't last. Should I now consider using those expensive antifungal pills? Dear Reader; As to your nail fungus, there is a new over-the-counter ointment that you may wish to try called Miranel. It works similiar to Vicks but has the added benefit of being able to penetrate the skin and nails more easly, allowing it to work more effectively. Remember, to keep your nails trimmed short for faster results. The kit is available at most pharmacies. You can also buy it online at www.miranelbrands.com Now may be the time to consult a podiatrist. This specialist will be able to take samples of your nail fungus and determine what type it is. This will also then allow him to give you treatment options. That said., a pharmacist recently wrote to me saying that those "expensive antfgungus pills" were available as a generic at Wal-Mart for $4. So while the medication may not be as expensive as it once was, it still is not my top choice. You must have blood work before starting the treatment to ensure there are no problems with your liver and both during and after treatment to ensure that your liver was not damaged by the pills. Nail fungus is not harmful, it is simply ugly. Avoid medication until you have eshausted every other option.

I currently work with a podiatrist and he swears by the vicks treatment. however, he says that few find relief because you need to continue the treatment nightly for a least one yr. or it will come back. Not many people make it that long. He also says that the internal medications are very harmful to the liver/kidneys and should be avoided as they have not proven useful in any of his patients. Hope this helps.

Very interesting article. Many of my pt's have nail fungus and I'd love to be able to confidently and accurately give advice on use of a product that would rid them of this very unsightly problem! What is the percentage of "cure" of the nail fungus using the Miranel?
