Nurse Charged with Injecting Patients with Bleach

Nurse Charged with Injecting Patients with Bleach

AP

May 30, 2008

LUFKIN, Texas — A former nurse accused of intentionally injecting bleach into two patients at a dialysis center was arrested Friday, police said.

Two witnesses said they saw Kimberly Clark Saenz, 34, draw bleach into syringes and inject it into two patients’ dialysis lines at the DaVita Dialysis Center on April 28, Lufkin police said in a statement.

Both patients survived, but one required treatment at a hospital, police said.

Police said tests showed bleach in the syringes and dialysis lines.

Saenz, who remained in Angelina County jail Friday evening, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Her bail was set at $200,000. A jail official said he did not know whether she had an attorney. Attempts to find her home phone number were unsuccessful.

DaVita spokesman Michael Chee said Saenz was fired from the center on April 29, a day after it was closed by authorities investigating the deaths of four patients in April.

“We hope that this individual is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Chee, who added that they are continuing to work with the police and state health authorities. He said the center remains closed.

Police spokesman Lt. David Young said that the investigation continues.

El Segundo, California-based DaVita has more than 1,300 outpatient facilities across the U.S.

I thought you all might be intereested to know that this same DaVita facility had been shut down by the state for 2 months and reopened with the condition that they would have physician, nurse, and technician monitors in the clinic. This was because of all of the deficiencies against them when state inspected. I would not be so quick to judge this nurse because I am not so convinced that what went down was the god's honest truth. I worked there for 5 years and quit in 2006. The thing with the nurse came out after the facility was shit down. Not another word has been mentioned about her. Nothing has ever come back out in the paper or on the news and this is a SMALL town. DaVita was probably looking for a scapegoat. I don't know that nurse and I left before she ever worked there. But there are too many things that don't add up.

Did the witnesses try to intervene or what? I guess they waited until it was done and then thought it needed to be reported. This is terrible.

I feel sorry for the other patients who had to reshedule or reroute to another facility and have to trust different health professionals after this ordeal.

The article did not say that Ms Saenz did it..........The article said "Two witnesses said they saw ".......... Please read it carfully ! --- Although i am not advocating for Ms Saenz inocence, i am stating that this article in no way states or proves that she did it. It does say that in fact the act was done, and Ms Saenz was arrested based on an acuzation. No confession, no fingerfrints, no video/ photo evidence, in fact the article is lacking much in the way of specifics positivly linking Ms Saenz to the dirty deed. Based on just the article > dirty deed was done, 2 people know about it (Ms Saenz is not one of them) physicle evidence is found of the deed (not the do'er) an acusation is made. I can think of 4 possibilities from this article; Ms Saenz did it, or the witnesses did it and needed someone to take the fall, or it was a mutual pact that fell apart and now they are rating each other out, or someone else did it and the witnesses are oportunists (in settling some past score). Does anyone else see anything in the article to formulate a plausable theory ?

This is really sickening. I thought the whole point of someone entering the nursing field was based on an appreciation for life and the desire to help others. I wonder what went on in Ms. Saenz's mind that enabled to her to rationalize her actions?

I do wonder why the witnesses didn't do anything to stop this nurse.

is it possible that the act of one ( or the few) makes everyone (in that same field) a little suspect / less trusted, in the public eye,,, not to mention our governments eye.......

This is awful. What kind of person would do something so cruel to another person and a nurse at that. I hope she is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, I have no sympathy for her she put lives at risk.

Not just one, but two witnesses saw this event....the first even, I can understand maybe not being able to intercept the action....but twice? Hello.....two people could have physically confined this woman if necessary.
