Nurse Arrested For Alleged Neglect of Elderly Patient
Jackson County Floridan / Staff Report
August 06, 2008
A Washington County man who worked as a nurse at an area health care facility has been arrested on charges that he neglected an elderly adult under his care and falsified medical records.
Ronald P. Culhane, of Vernon, is accused of failing to give a 90-year-old man the blood-thinning medication he was prescribed on at least nine occasions, and falsely indicating that the medicine, Coumadin, was administered.
If convicted of the the crimes as charged – one count of neglecting an elderly adult and nine counts of falsifying medical records – he faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to a press release from the office of Attorney General Bill McCollum, Culhane was arrested Tuesday by the AG’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation leading to Culhane’s arrest started after the AG’s Patient Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (PANE) team received some information from the Department of Children and Families’ Adult Protective Services unit.
Culhane, 54, was eventually fired from his job at Seabreeze Health Care in Panama City, where the incidents are alleged to have occurred.
