SCC is also common in North America. Approximately 1 in 20 people are expected to develop a SCC in their lifetime. SCC is found in the same distribution as BCC, with the highest prevalence on the head and neck. Older patients who drove vehicles during their working years will have a predominance of cancers on the left side of their heads due to increased sun exposure from vehicle windows. Left untreated, SCC will occasionally metastasize to the regional lymph nodes and beyond. SCC usually presents as a scaly red papule, often concurrent with local AK and surface erosion. Treatment is excision with differing margins depending on the severity noted on biopsy report. The Mohs technique can also be used if tissue conservation is needed. Small lesions can be treated with curettage and electrodesiccation. The SCC is usually resistant to topical treatment.

Patty- thanks for another basic overview on skin cancer. Although repeated sun exposure increases one's risk for skin cancer, skin cancer can occur later in life due to one bad sunburn in one's youth. Protect yourself and those you love (esp. your little ones).Diane
