Ok, so the managers are breathing down our backs about all of the overtime we've been getting (you all know the drill; 15 hours work to do in an 8 hour shift)...God forbid we'd EVER get a small amount of POSITIVE reinforcement. The clinic is supposedly in such financial dire straits, yet they're looking at building yet another new satellite facility?!!!! I'm just sicK and tired of the whole thing. Oh, and the manager also said in our last department meeting that we "need to have the right person doing the right job" (as if we didn't already have that one pegged), and "I've done each of your jobs, I know EXACTLY what it takes to get them done". What a load of BS considering she's a manager from an appointment coordinator! I think tha's about the closest she's ever gotten to direct patient care! Talk about getting under my skin...

and then to top it all off...it's about negative five degrees outside right now with a 25 degree below windchill, and wind gusts up to 50 MPH!!! Tomorrow doesn't look much better. Schools in the area already closed for the day...high of 0, and 35 degree below zero wind chills!!! EEEEKKKK!

I think I'll just climb into bed and stay theere until the groundhog tells me it's safe to come out!

Been there Done that! It's miserable to work in an environment like that. The morale's gotta stink. I put up with it for 2 years because of the patients, but finally I just couldn't take it anymore. It wears you down- physically and mentally. There's never a pat on the back for a job well done. But if any thing goes wrong, you'll hear about it. We were always short-staffed. Never enough supplies, No money for additional staffing or incentives to work extra shifts, but money to decorate the front hall with antique furniture and a chandelier. Everything was about cost. Whether or not to send someone to ER because the nursing home would have to foot the bill for the ambulance. It was just ridiculous. I could go on and on. I will never work in an environment like that again. It's too hard on the soul.

I just found out too that we have these "air balloons" (I'll try to get a picture one day, and post it...they really are neat looking) in the front entry of the building. The light bulbs for them cost $100.00 each! The chair that I sit on cost over $300.00, the spending accounts these guys have to supply us with paper (although we are a "paperless facility and use far less than we ever have), pens, and other office supplies is unreal! They won't even consider a local retailer, were we could likely get a MUCH better price!

The clinic administration states that a big part of the problem (why the clinic is financially stressed) is the payor mix...apparently too many patients on Medicaid, and Medicare, where we get paid less than $.30 on the dollar. The surrounding medical facilities have legally, and diplomatically found a way to reduce the numbers of these patients seen, but because this clinic is a "not for profit" organization (believe you me those big dogs are STILL taking home substantial paychecks), we take them all.

The rest of the staff (including doctors) are just miffed about all of this. We all get along really well, and work great as a team, but the management is not helping at all. We can't get them to understand that it just doesn't work the way it should in an "ideal" world. I don't want to quit because I've got a great pension plan, 401K, and of course I've built a nice rapport with patients, and staff. I work M-F, no weekends, no holidays, and that's not something I want to give up to work someplace else. The seniority thing doesn't really bother me too much, because I don't vie for vacation spots with anyone, we just all work it out together. It's really nice that way. I (and the rest of the staff at the very bottom of the corporate food chain) would just like to have a little recognition for a job well done. We do a very good job. Management is VERY scarce out by us...they visit for a few minutes once or twice a month in our department...and we manage ourselves. It's only when the big guys paychecks are threatened to be a bit smaller (BTW I grossed just about $25,000 for the year...I'd like to see them pinch their pennies out of that!), that the you-know-what hits the fan!

Hope this never haappens to anyone but the not for profit that I worked for was on 60 minutes and 20 20. I really believed in what they were doing and thought the doctor walked on water. First job out of nursing school. Crushed. Just crushed

Yeah tell me about that...I fell in the parking lot on my way into work two days before Christmas two years ago. I smashed my wrist up pretty good, and ended up missing a total of almost 3 months of work due to surgeries (removal of one bone in my hand, a plate, and four screws to hold everything else in place) and subsequent PT. I found out that the hospital that we're attached to is responsible for the groundskeeping...well needless to say the parking lot that day was like an ice rink (and as employees, we have to park in the lot northernmost from the building). It's an uphill walk from the lot to the door, and I went down FAST! I tried to file a suit with the hospital for not keeping the area safe for pedestrians, as the greeter had called for them FOUR times prior to my injury. The clinic administration stepped in and threatened the witnessing staff. Essentially saying to them that if they gave any testimony (which according to them "it was not their place to do") they would (not in so many words) lose their jobs. Needless to say, I was given about $600.00 for my loss. What a waste. I have very little respect for the company itself, but I love my job, and the people I work with.

What a shame that organizations can get by with so much trash like that. IT will all come around one day.

I also work for a not for profit organization and I feel your pain. I have been there 17 years and like you have wonderful benefits and a retirement plan that I refuse to give up! Salary sucks but again Monday thru Friday with one call and weekends only every 6 wks. 8 yrs to go and I can retire. Rarely ever is a compliment given or a simple thank you for staying over for taking care of that mess for dealing with blah blah. But if you forgot something, didn't relay a message (especially a personal one) look out. We are all treated like a classroom of children. You know the drill, if one screws up, is late with paperwork, too much OT ect we ALL get a lecture. Never do they take the offender off and privately discuss the issue with that person.
Last but not least I had a workers comp injury on the job (of course) and they have appealed all the way to the state supreme court........but I am not to take it personally! How else do you take that?

CJRN, I'm feeling your pain. I don't agree with it one bit! Not that I don't enjoy what freedoms, and liberties I DO I have, but since when did people start treating each other like such CRAP? When did everyone stop caring about life and put the almighty dollar first? It frustrates me! Well it does more than that, but I wouldn't dare to lash out here with all the explicatives running through my head right about now!

Try working as a military nurse where you cannot call in sick. You don't have set hours and you have to work overtime and don't get paid for it.

that's a ditto for me. I tried ARMY first (couldn't go with my tattoo...even thought I scored the highest on the "entrance exam"...I was the only one not fresh out of HS!). Almost joined the Air Force, but after boot camp, and then immediately on to Officer's Training School, I couldn't stand the idea of being away from my son for so long!

Well, so starts another week. I am expecting to get yelled at, because after being out with sick kids for two days, I got back to see that my relief really didn't do squat, and I ended up staying late for two days in a row trying to catch up! I told my husband that I'm almost ready to take another hiatus from the medical profession last night. I love my job, and the people I work with (for the most part), but I am really starting to dislike to political BS. S**T rolls downhill, and it always seems to stop at my feet!

Drinking when your frustrated, puts a headache on top of a headache. I like to calm down first, and then have a drink. Try venting first, then have the drink, it works for me.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I prefer to vent, but I do drink when my problems are too untolerable, don't recommend drinking as a long term quick fix, we should use others ways to solve our problems, like Da momb recommend crawling in bed until the ground hogs come out, have done that too!!!

that's another way to deal (or not to deal) with problems, curl up in a ball and sleep. I do that too sometimes. Trouble is, when you wake up, the problem is still there. Same with drinking. Drinking doesn't solve anything, just makes you forget about it for awhile (or not care).

Ok, just had my review, and I smell a backstabber in the department...in fact, it reeks of someone who just wants me to leave!  Which makes all that MORE inclined to make the place more like home...(not that it has much to do with it, but I'm a Taurus-stubborn bull).  Anyway, it was supposedly reported to my assistant mgr who did my review, that I make multiple "personal" phone calls...I had to laugh.  The only one I really know here is my husband, and he could most likely count on one hand how many times I've called him in the past 6-8 months, at least!  I DON'T HAVE TIME for personal calls!!!  I have five hours to review labs for 3-4 doctors, call patients back with their results, patient education, prescription refills, prior authorizations, and then if needed, I also room patients, do procedures, injections and blood pressure checks...I barely have the time to take a quick repreive to the bathroom for goodness sake!  Yet stated on my review was that I need to help out more! (What the...)

The thing that irks me about the whole thing, is that I used to work specifically with one provider.  I roomed all the patients, did lab reviews and call backs, procedures, blood pressure checks, injections, prior auths, and Rx refills...and only averaged two hours of OT in a 2 week pay period!  Now, my current position was created to help eliminate OT for the department, and there has been MORE!!!  Only I have the stress of completing my work in such a restricted time frame...my hours are from noon to 5 PM, and I get NO overtime, even if I have to stay late to complete my job, because I average only 25 hours, not 40, per week!

To top it all off, I brought home a copy of my written review, and never noticed until reading it that night that at the very end it says that I may want to consider moving to another department!!!

I have never, nor will I ever point fingers directly at any specific person for "wrongdoings" in the department.  I feel that it's management's job to address theses kinds of issues, not mine.  It's different if someone were say, harrassing me, or contributing to a unhealthy working environment, but that's not the case.

UUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!  Why do people have to be so sophmoric?

Damomb: I am sorry about you're review. In my exprience, the ones that work the hardest, get looked at the hardest. It makes everyone else that is not working like they are suppose to look bad or feel guilty. So, in retaliation, they make up complaints about the ones working hard. It's not fair, but it's usually how things work. I keep threatening to stop working hard and be lazy likes some of the ones around here. Unfortunately my conscience or work ethic will not let me. Keep your head up , girl!

How discouraging. How can that manager put in your review about phone calls if she/he did not witness it? Even if you did make calls, review time is not the time to reprimand someone. The things in your review are all a sign of piss poor management.

I suggest that you put something in writing to go back to her with and ask that your part be paced directly in your file. Don’t let it get you down. You can even write up one that you tear up and she does not see just to let off steam..

you need to rebut the review, send it over the Ass. Mgr's head if need be. Take the "personal risk" (what they call it here) and "push back"

Don't move on, stay, do your job to THEIR standards, it'll piss them off even more

Its about who's ass you have your lips attached to here.  Retaliation, even if done appropriately, will get me no where.  Been there, tried to do that, and ended up getting stuck with NO RAISE for almost 3 years!  Can't afford that again, so I guess I'll just suck it up...thanks for the advise though.

Shan4691, you have a good point too, and I never would have considered it, but it makes complete sense!  I'll just keep trying to make everyone "look bad"!  God, I LOVE MY JOB!!!  (he-he-he)
