Is Toradol really safe for everyone? I was speaking with a surgeon the other day, and he said that it should never be given to a post op ortho patient. I know it is often used though, so I walked away from the conversation very confused and concerned.

Toradol in generally not used for post op because of it's anticoagulant effects...We don't use it if a pt is high risk for any GI/peptic ulcer issues either...Any pt that shouldn't be on a NSAID shouldn't have Toradol. J.

That opinion the ortho surgeon gave is debated in the bone world. There is research that says Toradol will slow down bone healing. I worked with 4 ortho-trauma surgeons...2 used it...2 did not. jjicurn03 is right on with the GI/peptic ulcer patients, etc.

Gotta tell you though....I love the drug. I actually had an ortho patient, that no matter what I threw at him (not and opioid addict!) it just didn't work well. Gave him IV Toradol and I have never seen a happier person!

I have a patient also who prefers toradol and claimed she has better relief than morphine.

chicrn: I'm not surprised by your patient's comment. People underestimate the value of NSAIDs. For certain types of pain, especially bone pain, NSAIDs work better than narcotics.

In the ER, if we had a patient that needed surgery and we had given Toradol, the surgeon often would wait until the drug was out of the system before he'd go to the OR, unless it was a life threatening problem. They explained to me the anti-coag effects cause more bleeding during surgery, thus more blood loss. I've seen it ordered frequently post op when I worked med surg.

My dad had open heart surgery 3 weeks ago. Initially they gave him Fentanyl for pain, but it depressed his respiratory function, and he said it didn't help his pain at all. Then they switched him to Toradol, and after that he had no pain at all.
