Skirts worn by Nurses

Posted 3 months ago This question may seem a little crazy, but... Generally speaking, I only wear skirts. Whether in nursing school or employed at a hospital, Is it mandatory for nurses to wear pants or is skirts ever an option? I will be entering nursing school in January, and I am just trying to get an idea of what will be required. |

Posted 3 months ago no it's not mandatory to wear slacks, but when you're bending, lifting moving around as a nurse does, your modesty can be compromised. Also slacks protect your legs from contaminants Deb

Posted 3 months ago kd, dmaz is right, it's not mandatory to wear pants but it is strongly discouraged to wear a dress, very few nurses wear dresses, it's more for nostalgia than practical. If you do really want to wear a dress check out the U.S. Navy female uniform dresses, a good winter grade pantyhose will provide adequate protection for your modesty. Good luck.

Posted 3 months ago We have a couple of nurses who wear skirts in our department, but it's part of their faith.

Posted 3 months ago I'm sure skirts aren't against dress code, but I would imagine that some of the more physical aspects of the job would make a skirt impractical. Personally, I don't wear them because I don't like to shave my legs, HA!

Posted 3 months ago I only wore dresses until 1995. I could climb all over in them, I was younger then. It was real nursey to wear the white dress and white nylons. Once I started wearing pants I've never worn another dress, probably a good thing. You don't see many dresses these days. The day of the dress and caps are gone :(

Posted 3 months ago I haven't seen a nurse in a dress in years and years. I guess you could of you wanted to but with all the bending and reaching, pants are much better and more comfortable. I haven't worn a nursing dress since nursing school 27 years ago!

Posted 3 months ago I have to say that today I had a chance to meet and talk to someone who only wears dresses and has to have her head covered when outside her home because of religious believes. She tells me that she wears spandex (cyclist type) or sweats, or shorts and even sometimes pants and then puts a dress over them, not so stylish, but as long as the dress is the most outer garment, there should be no problem.

Posted 3 months ago From the nursing schools that I have looked into, and the one I will be starting at in the fall - skirts appear to be an option since some students will only wear skirts because of religious convictions. The one thing that you will need to keep in mind regarding the skirt, is at least at school you will not be able to just wear anything under it. At my school our skirts (if you choose to wear a skirt) must be accompanied by stockings or tights in white with white shoes. So just make sure when you are picking up your skirt you check on the stocking requirements. This is different since our pants are to be accompanied by navy socks and navy shoes. The second thing that I noticed with the skirt, is often the uniform in nursing school skirts do not have pockets. Yet, interestingly the uniform pants have all sorts of pockets. I am told that if you wear the skirt, you can get a specified nurses fanny pack (again according to school regulation colors) to wear to make up for the no pockets.

| Posted 3 months ago I just heard on the news last night the nurses in Spain are required to wear "mini skirts" as part of their uniforms. They do not like them to wear pants and are paid more for wearing skirts. It was on the nightly news. How about that for no rights for nurses!!!

Posted 3 months ago It sounds like they still have a choice. They can choose to wear pants or a mini skirt. I know which one I'd choose.

Posted 2 months ago margaritka said: for some men it's a fetish, white skirts, hose, shoes (nurse in general) I wear a flight suit 90% of the time, but if I'm doing my ED tour, required once a month, to tease some of the guys I know have this "problem" I will deck out in full whites. My GF's mom, rest her soul, was an RN for 50 + years, her old school ways were impressive and strict. It was always my luck when I saw her I was in the dress whites. LOL I've even been known to wear my cap.
