I Lost my job a year ago and my credit has tanked since. Losing my house, car rep...etc. I have been in school for a year now pursuing acceptance into a nursing program. Will my bad credit prevent me from being hired by a hospital? I am also considering bankruptcy, will that have any negative effect? Thank you for responses.

As far as I've heard, credit ratings do not necessarily deny you a job as an RN, especially when so many young people like myself are running their credit into the ground with student debts; and with the ongoing housing/credit crisis. I think primarily credit checks are for high-security posts (like in the military) and banking employees (which makes sense... you don't want people hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to have access to everyone's money!). The only things that would really deny you are a specific list of felonies they're checking for on your background/criminal screening.

Don't take this for gospel, though, I'm just speaking word of mouth. But I still wouldn't worry too much.

that is a good question.   i honestly didn't know they would do a credit check on you and background makes more sense.  But I agree with PP with all the credit issues going on that should be the furthest thing from there mind since theres a shortage of nurses.

In this day I am sure none of this will be a problem. In all my years of nursing in Fl I have only had one hospital check my credit and have had several jobs since then, one recent with this subject never brought up. Follow your dreams and your credit is really no employers business. Most  of us have fallen on hard times. It takes seven years for the bad credit to go away and ten years for BR on your credit report.

Follow your dreams and don't let this misfortune stop you from growing!!

No from what you've mentioned in the forum...this will not stop you.   From any nursing program that I know of...I use to work in recruitment for a hospital...and this wouldn't stop you from getting hired as well...things like felonies and misdemenors.  Any drugs related charges or an assault for any reason would hamper you.  Normally you wouldn't get into a reputable nursing school with these on your record.

Good luck to you hope everthing works out

Bad credit does not stop you...only if you are dealing in money

As long as you don't plan on commiting any felonies you should be okay!
