Posted 7 months ago I've heard some debates lately (mainly among socially liberal, fiscally conservative types) that people should be able to buy and sell organs on the free market under the jurisdiction of doctors. Some suggest that this would cut down on the very long wait lists for organ transplants, drive down the massive costs of replacement surgery, and would minimize the influence of the black market in organ trade. On one hand, I think that people should be able to do what they want with their own bodies, but the potential for abuse seems sky-high... what do you think? |

| Posted 7 months ago I have very mixed feelings on this topic as well.....I am donating my body to science. I choose to do that as a gift for someone else. However, I like the idea that it would make more organs available if persons were inspired to donate if they made money off it. Wait a minute CMCKEAG.....if one SELLS their organs, they would be dead already right? SO, HOW could they GET an organ after they were already dead???? You confused me there?? A good man loves God and lives well....but

| Posted 7 months ago I think instead of offering someone money for their organs, offer them education. Alot of people shy away from the "organ donor" title because they believe that if invovled in an accident the Hospital will not do their best to keep them alive, therefore letting them die to use their organs. (that may not have made complete sense, I am on my lunch and typing fast.) If we educate people to the importance of organ donation, then I think alot more people would be for it. I don't want my organs to be sold so someone else can live, that seems harsh. I would rather give them away.... Taylor's Wife, Navy Wife Proud and Strong!

| Posted 7 months ago I understand what you are saying cmckeag. Some countries do that on the black market, sell organs in trade for something else. If you are that hard up for money, that you have to sell your kidney, darn right you need to buy one back later if you need it. Taylor's Wife, Navy Wife Proud and Strong!

| Posted 6 months ago I was at the DMV a few weeks ago changing my lisence from MI to IL... I neglected to donate my body at that time because they said it constituted a 'legally binding contract,' which frightened me. What if I *need* my organs? |

They don't take them unless and until you're declared legally dead. Every state as far as I know it's a legally binding contract. Deb

| Posted 6 months ago Has anyone been keeping up with the trial in San Luis Obispo, CA regarding the charge that a doctor let a young man die in order to harvest his organs? I haven't seen it in the news lately, but a few weeks ago it was a hot button issue - at least in CA. |

| Posted 6 months ago Kind of charming story: my great-grandma died at the age of 89, and before she passed my grandma and I were helping her with her plans... she wanted to donate all of her organs, even her eyes. My grandma goes, "Mom, you can't see worth a damn." And my great grandma goes, "Okay, well... they can have my glasses, too." We all had a good laugh about it. I love to see both that level of humor and compassion :) |
