Hey everyone.  If any of you read one of the other threads that I have posted on this site you know what I have been through in regards to school and the classes that I have taken.  I only need A&P I and II in order to apply to the ADN program at a local college - however in order to take that I have to take some other class first.  I feel like I have spent more time taking classes that I really in a way don't need.  I don't get it.  I mean I know and understand the reasoning behind having to take one class to get to another.  What I don't get is - why is it so hard to get into a nursing program?  I hear all the time about the nursing shortages in my area.  I may be wrong for saying this - but the way I look at it - if it weren't so hard to get into a good nursing program then there probably wouldn't be a nursing shortage.  I know several people that are interested in the nursing field and would make really good nurses - but they are having a hard time getting in.  I know there has to be alot of discipline to be in the nursing field - or else there would be a lot of nurses out there that shouldn't be a nurse.  I have been going to college for almost 4 years now - taking the basic classes in which I was advised to do in the first place.  But in order to take them I had to have something else first.  Now almost 4 years later - I am told that all I needed to apply to the nursing program was A&P.  I could have been through already.  I know I should have checked into it better myself - but I was going by what my advisor was telling me.  I am to the point of throwing my hands up in the air and saying forget it.  Anyone got any words of wisdom for me?

Don't give up if nursing is what you really wan to do. It sounds like you need a new advisor. Unfortunately, the school dictates what classes are needed prior to other classes. Sometimes you just have to play the game to get to the end you want. What is the other class you need before A&P?

I have to take a lab based sciece course (such as General Biology).

Ever since I was a little girl I always said I wanted to a Nurse.  Now, I admit I have my doubts.  I don't know if it the fear of it all or what.  I have worked in several different fields but none of them add up to what I want to do the rest of my life.  If that makes any sense.   But what does it mean when you have doubts about nursing?  I mean seriously question  is that what I want to do?  The only other thing that I like to do is legal work (which I have 5 years experience in).

Do not give up. It will be well worth the wait and the problems you overcome to get there. You would think it would be made easier considering the shortage wouldn't you?

Okay- Bio is not bad and I know that it seems that you are not going to use it in normal practice, but it is a building block to the A&P. There are some basic concepts that you need so you will understand the harder courses. Besides, look at it as an easy "A" for you. Help your GPA and all. You can do it!

Thanks CD and shan for your advise.  I guess I am just ready to get it all done.  That has always been one of my biggest problems.  I aim for something but then I want to rush to get it done.  I guess with a field as serious as nursing and as critical as it is I don't need to rush do I.  I need to allow all that I learn to absorb in.  I can also take some other courses to get my GPA built back up.  And also I can look into some other things that would better my chances of getting into the nursing program.  In other words - I need to get the cart behind the horse and hold tight to the reins.

You will get there. Reminds me of a saying I have seen. "I want patience and I want it right now!"

It's almost like a test in your tenacity.  Maybe this is how the school filters out quitters before they get to clinicals.  You can do this, it's just another hurdle to jump.

Hey everyone

I appreciated all the replies to my post - each one has been helpful and encouraging.  I feel that I have come to a final decision on my career.  For a while now I have been juggling with deciding if I wanted to pursue a nursing career or go into the paralegal field since I already have experience in the paralegal field.  Well, after talking to an attorney friend of mine I have decided to pursue a career as a Legal Nurse.  I am really excited about this and can't wait to start.  If anyone has any words of wisdom on this career choice - please feel free to share.
