When I see an employer advertise competitive salary, I figure he's chosen a fancy way to say, "We pay the same as the next guy."

Don't you think competing employers should try a little harder?

Has this sort of PR stuff been fooling anyone?

This kind of thing been angering or nauseating anyone else?

A few years ago, a former instructor--she manages a unit for a hospital in a small community--told us that surrounding hospitals had arranged salary levels that were basically the same from one hospital to the next; the aim was to discourage employee migration for the sake of better pay.

This kind of thing sound familiar to you other folks? Please comment.

When I was actively nursing and now I'm a recruiter, I've found competitive means this.....we pay two dollars less per hour or perhaps 2 dollars more an hour.  I laugh, because it just makes me think they think nurses don't discuss these things.  Well, they're wrong. We do.

Competetive??one might pay a dime more...please..usually it is lower...i guess they still think we should work for free...all those bonuses offered are also BS.  Like relocation...always a reimbursement..never upfront...ridiculous if you ask me

One of my favorites is “salary commensurate with experience” What the Hell does that one mean?  What if someone has been nursing for 40 years? Will they really give them that much more money? Hell no. Somewhere I saw a funny little thing on how to read the want ads. Wish I could find it.

You are so right.  I have a friend who has been a nurse for 20 years!!!!  She does not make that much more then I will as a new grad.

My mom is still in nursing. she has long left clinical nursing behind.

She says "I've done my tour of duty ,I've got the battle scars to prove it"

In all ,its been about 30 years for her.  She does case management for an state consultant firm. It seems ,it comes to a point where a nurse's  pay scale  starts to plataeu.and no matter what his/her experience. If my mom and I applied for the same Med/surg job tody, she would make what .....5-6 dollars more than me, 5-6 dollars for 30more years experience.

I think thats ridiculous!!! :o(

The only thing competitive is the hospitals try to pay the least and employee the nurses that will work the hardest.  Facility that gets this WINS!

I knew if I looked hard enough I could find it in this pile of junk. Here it is:

The Real Meaning Behind Job Descriptions

"COMPETITIVE SALARY"

We remain competitive by paying less than our competitors.

"JOIN OUR FAST-PACED COMPANY"

We have no time to train you.

"CASUAL WORK ATMOSPHERE"

We don't pay enough to expect that you'll dress up.

"MUST BE DEADLINE-ORIENTED"

You'll be six months behind schedule on your first day.

"SOME OVERTIME REQUIRED"

Some time each night and some time each weekend.

"DUTIES WILL VARY"

Anyone in the office can boss you around.

"MUST HAVE AN EYE FOR DETAIL"

We have no quality control.

"CAREER-MINDED"

Female Applicants must be childless (and remain that way).

"APPLY IN PERSON"

If you're old, fat or ugly you'll be told the position has been filled.

"NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE"

We've filled the job; our call for resumes is just a legal formality.

"SEEKING CANDIDATES WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF EXPERIENCE"

You'll need it to replace three people who just left.

"PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS A MUST"

You're walking into a company in perpetual chaos.

"REQUIRES TEAM LEADERSHIP SKILLS"

You'll have the responsibilities of a manager, without the pay or respect.

"GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS"

Management communicates, you listen, figure out what they want and do it.
