Surgical Tech Pay
Posted about 1 month ago I have been thinking about going back to school for nursing. My sister is currently a Surgical Tech in the Bronx, NY and she is also thinking about going back to school for Nursing. She advised me that all the RN does in the OR is stand there and basically watch while the ST's handle all of the instruments but the RN's get paid more. From reading your panel discussions, does it make sense to maybe go back to school for ST and see if I really enjoy being in the nursing field or going straight back for nursing. Also does anyone know what is the average pay for a ST in New York with no experience as well as one with at least 3 years experience. Another question since I'm on the subject, I understand Health Care field is one that is much in demand, can anyone recommend a career in this field that will only require to go back to school for something like a certification or maybe nothing more than a year in school such as Radiologists, etc and besides Nurses and Doctors what other career in the health care field would pay high? |

Posted about 1 month ago Well having been an OR nurse for almost 30 years, I want to work where your sister does, because I never just stood around and watched. I ran, from the time I walked into my room at the beginning of my shift, until I finally was relieved to go home. The RN's get paid more because they have far more responsibility, are licensed, not certified, and the ORT works under the nurses license, something many seem to not understand. We also have more education, have a much larger scope of practice. Radiology techs go to school for two years and graduate with an AAS degree. You can also advance your education and get higher pay when you're certified in CT scans, MRI's, Mammorgraphy. Medical technicians is another area. Check out salary.com to find pay scales Deb

Posted about 1 month ago dmazment, Thank you for your response. I will definitely check out salary.com, do you know of any other health career's that are not RN/LPN/CN or doctors, other than Radiologist? And would you happen to know exactly what medical technicians do?

Posted about 1 month ago Newlife37, a better question for you would be "What is it that you want to do?" The medical field is so diverse, as is nursing. Are you interested only in OR nursing? You're missing out on a lot if you don't broaden your scope.

Posted about 1 month ago It seems like you are looking to make "big" money but, don't want to put the work in. Most "in demand" jobs in the medical field typically require a stronge educational background. Radiology in is a 2 year program (not including 2years of pre-requisites) at any College/ Community College in California. If you are looking to get in and get out I would suggest going to a school like Bryman, Evergreen College. I would suggest stop thinking about, how long it is going to take, after all is 2 year s really that long? and just do it!
