Should we go back to the good old days of the long-term psych hospitalizations?

Posted about 1 month ago Hey all, I got published again. I am excited. I am ticked off because they put my title as an LPN instead of Nurse Practitioner. I just fired them off an email. They will correct it. Still. Any way, go to this site: http://www.currentpsychiatry.com/default.asp?LogOff=1 and click on COMMENTS & CONTROVERSIES Mine is Prevent tragic consequences Can you tell that I am excited? If you go to the same sight above and go to the March issue you will find the editorial that I commented on. So, what do you all think? Should we go back to the good old days of the long-term psych hospitalizations? Do you think that there are some patients who should be hospitalized for life?

Posted about 1 month ago YEAH! you did seem a bit heated in that, but I'm sure it's pure desire to get the word out, and make everyone aware of the problems associated with the management of these cases. Congrats on the article! I like I can not say for sure if I agree that LT hospitalization is the only safe way, perhaps if there is no hope at all, it makes sense. But then what quality of life is left for that "client"? I guess I over estimate how effective outpatient care can be. Safety first, and if they are harmfull to themselves or others, lock them up somewhere! Well, if I had it my way, I would like to play mad scientist and study their brains!

Posted about 1 month ago Congratulations cd! Personally, I think there are many cases where long term hospitalizations would be far more beneficial than releasing these poor souls to live on the streets. I also think, there are cases where longer term hospitalizations would benefit those who need further treatment and evaluation to help them cope with society. Mostly we have to thank insurance companies for their short sighted views on actually helping those who need it. Their total focus on profit has been a huge detriment to health care in general. Deb

Posted about 1 month ago My hometown has the distinction of having more schizophrenic homeless than any other city in America. We used to have three mental hospitals, which were all closed down during the Reagan years. The people that were too mentally ill to hold down a job, but not deemed severe enough to stay in the hospital, were turned out to the streets. We've had problems with college kids being beaten to death by homeless men in a bad spell.
