I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas on how to improve memory. Not just with school but in general. It seems now that I am in school, work, and have two kids I am so forgetfull. I sometimes forget peoples' names, to bring a book to class, or even things at the grocery store that are on my grocery list. I've heard the saying as you get older you loose your memory but I'm only in my late twenties and am scared to see how forgetfull I am going to be when I "get older". I am up for any suggestions.

steph: welcome to nursing school and brain farts! I think this happens to most nursing students. It is called overload. Just make lists of everything. I forgot peoples names, forgot to buy gas, etc. I was so focused on school I used to joke that I was saving my brain for the next test.

Start with keeping "to do lists" and get some help at home. You do not have to do everything.

Steph, nursing school will induce a multitude of cerebral defects.  Getting as much sleep as possible is one of the only things that has helped my memory in the past.  Although, that hasn't happened much since we started reproducing and..........what were we talking about?

Steph-that's called having too much on your mind. You're doing so much it's hard to keep up with everything. I jot alot of stuff down on sticky notes but sometimes I forget where I left the note! LOL Word games, crossword puzzles, sudoko, word games on the computer, all of these will help to keep your brain active but may not help with remembering things. (Homer Simpson said "whenever you learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out" I believe this.) Like RNdude said, getting a good night's sleep is important. Also eating right and exercise .

Thanks for all the tips. It feels better to know i'm not the only one, others can't remember things also. If there were only more hours in the day.....

I am right there with you on forgetting everything not related to nursing.  I start summer classes tomorrow and already feel the pressure and anxiety increasing.  We have two test on the first day and I am praying I am prepared enough.  I know nursing school is one of the hardest things I have ever done.  Take it one day at a time, sometimes one second at a time and keep on pushing through.  The payoff of accomplishing nursing school will pay off!

Steph, don't feel alone.  I have brain farts all the time!  LOL  I think the advise everyone has given you is really good.  Just try not to think too far ahead.  I had to write EVERYTHING down on my school agenda.  If I had lost it I would have been in serious trouble.    Good luck, get some sleep, and take some time for yourself to do something you like to do.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Just to let you know - it gets better after school ends!  It really does.  Now that I don't have three papers, five care plans, six quizzes and 17 chapters to worry about - I can remember what I need at the grocery store, household chores, and hey, I've got a wife and two kids in my house!  Where'd they come from?

Seriously, it gets better.  Just keep in mind that you can only do what you can do, and most people will be very tolerant - more so than you are of yourself.  I used my PDA/Palm Pilot religiously - but a pocket planner of some kind - any kind may well be your best friend for the next couple years.

Good luck, you'll be fine!
