Occasionally I find some exceptionally well-written work on various medical topics, the kind that's instructional and a pleasure to read, not a chore.

I'm looking for more, a whole lot more.

Some of my favorites follow. Please post some of your own favorites.

Books:       A Natural History of the Senses ; An Alchemy of Mind: The Marvel and Mystery of the Brain, both by Diane Ackerman, a nationally best-selling author.

The Sociopath Next Door, Martha Stout.

Articles:  "Patient Predator," Kevin Patterson, The Best American Science Writing:  2004 (Think HIV is a priority? Wait till you read about the  resurgence of tuberculosis and its many strains that are resistant to antibiotics.)

"Stripped for Parts," Jennifer Kahn, The Best American Science Writing:  2004 ( "Sustaining a dead body until its organs can be harvested is a tricky process. . . ." )

"Are Antibiotics Killing Us?," Jessica Snyder Sachs, The Best American Science and Nature Writing:  2006 ( "Trillions" of bacteria occupy our body and skin. They may form an ecosystem that antibiotics disrupt. When we displace one bacterium, are we preparing a habitat for other, even less hospitable bacteria?)

 Writers:  Angier, Natalie

                 Gawande, Atul

                 Rouche, Berton,

                 Nuland, Sherwin B.

Herriot, James (a veterinarian, and a guilty pleasure; not likely to help nurses become better nurses)
