Hello, I am Janna. I am currently on disability, however, I would like to return to nursing.  I have not worked since 6/04.  I became an LPN at the age of 40 in 1997.  My nursing background is mainly in behavioral health.  I have a chronic illness which exacerbated in 2004.  However, my condition has stabilized on meds.  I am ready to return to work PT.  Although, it is challenging for me, since I have been out of nursing for four years.  I just re-instated my license.  I believe that I may have to take a refresher course before anyone will consider hiring me.   I have interviewed for a few jobs, but did not receive any job offers.  I believe that I would like to be a home health/hospice nurse.  But, I will need to obtain some skills, since I have only worked in behavioral health.  I graduated in 1996 and basically just worked in behavioral health.

I found this site as a link from monster.com.  Hopefully, I may get some tips on obtaining a nursing job that I would like.  Or, maybe find other nurses in similar situation as mine.

Hello, I just viewed your concerns about returning into the nursing field. First, I wanted to ask, do you tell the jobs that you are applying to about your health. I don't want to sound jugdemental, but some jobs discriminate against people that are  on disability, such as worker comp, etc. I wanted to ask, does your disability affect your ability to do the job, some employees judge you accordinally to how much time you will be out sick. I think you are doing great to still want to come back to nursing with your present condition, you are so brave.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I have never divulged my disability, as it is hidden.  My illness is sarcoidosis, which has periods of remissions and exacerbations.  I have been in somewhat remission mode for two years now.  By somewhat remission I mean that it is controlled with meds.  I have had no flare-ups for two years.  So, I feel confident that I am able to return to nursing.  However, I know my limitations, and I only want to work part-time.

But, I am working with OVR to get me back to work.  My placement counselor thinks that I should not hide my disability.  I was asked in two interviews why I left my last job.  The real reason was my health.  However, I told them that I decided to take some time off and be a full-time homemaker.  My counselor says that SS will pay 1/2 of my wages for three months to give employers incentive to hire.  And, they get a tax break.

I just hope that I am able to find a job in nursing.

I know the feeling but my disability is the fact that I was injured while at work. I have been out of work for over a year and had  Spinal Fusion.  I was in school for LVN and had to drop out now I am wondering if my work will take me back and what will I do as a CNA at a hosiptal. It is very hard when you want to get back to work. I am also going to have an Epideral sometime soon Due to I am having pain in my leg and butt area. Boy I hope to get back to work soon.

I injured my shoulder three years ago. I have a bi-trap injury, which is the worse place beside your knees and back to injure. I got laid off a UCLA medical Center six months ago, it was for the best. I am scared to death to work through the registry or a convalesent home, knowing that I have this type of injury. So know I collect unemployment, and work part-time doing in-home supportive service for my mom and brother, which isn't enough money to do anything, here in CALI. I am looking forward to getting my RN license quick, I don't know how much of this I can take.

There is so much pain out there! An injury ended my bedside career. As part of my healing process I have tried to make sense out of my loss. Being a bedside nurse was my identity and security, I knew that I could always find a job. The purpose or meaning that I have been able to find for what happened to me, is to help other nurses. Sometimes it is just in a small way such as answering a post in one of these forums.

I have also discovered other parts of myself that I never would have developed had this not happened. I have kept working by applying for jobs that I could physical do, even on my worst days. There really are so many options for nurses--explore and find the right one for you.

It is illegal to ask about injury or disability before you are hired as per the American's with Disabilities Act. However it is legal to ask you to pass a physical once  you are hired.  If you choose to keep your dissability hidden--you cannot ask for accomodations. If you come out in the open you face other hurdles. An employer does not have to accomodate you if it is too much of a burden for the organization or if you cannot "perform your essential duties."

I have recommended these books many times:

  • Living Well with a Hidden Disability by Stacey Taylor

  • Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses working with disAbilities by Donna Carol Maheady

I have other great books listed on my website www.nursingvoice.com I found answers in books when there was no where else to turn.

I sincerely wish you healing and peace.

Hellooo!  I've been UNEMPLOYED since March 3, 2008! This is unnerving, never  experienced this in my 14 years as an LPN! Now, I'm wondering, is it the economy or is it my age, as, I just turned 60 in February. There aren't a lot of offerings for LPN's in the job postings and the few that are offered are either prison position work too far from my home or a position in SNF for a BAYLOR weekend shift that's not my style. There are 2 ads that I have seen for the past 7 months for  postions in, (1), a GYN practice and (2) a Geriatrics Rehab. The fact that  these positions have been advertised  for going on 7 months says a lot about the working conditions. So, I'm challenged! I'm not ready to retire, gone thru savings, scrambling for education funds, selling stuff to lighten my load! May have to pack it all in my car and move to the beach!

According to your profile I see that you live in Gainseville (that's a very pretty area of Florida by the way) There is a big shortage of LPNs down our way in Clearwater, especially in Long Term Care. There are 200 nursing homes in Pinellas county alone. The beaches are beautiful here.

Hey, I too, am finding it difficult to get a job at age 52!    I left nursing in 2003 after my son went to Iraq, my Mom passed away, and I was stressed to the max.   I went back to school, got my BSN, have kept up on all CE's and more,   I want to change from ICU nights to LD or postpartum, as I worked in Hospice after ICU and I need to see the bright side of nursing for a while!    I can't seem to get my foot in the door.    I did leave on bad terms with the first hospital, as the manager of the unit was very skilled and demanded that I stay after shift and do a performance evaluation, without giving me any prior notice.  When I refused because I had to pick up my children, I had not had a chance to eat anything since prior to my 12 hour shift, as no one was available to cover for me,(which was usual), I had a particularly rough night and the person that came in to relieve me for the next shift was over an hour late.   I quit at that point and they now refuse to rehire me and they are one of only two hospitals in our area!    Yes, I may have been unreasonable, but at the time I didn't really think about it, all I knew is that my kids were going to be home alone, I was shaking from starvation, mad that no one had come in to take over the 3 ICU patients that I had all night  (Not counting another one that was moved and a new admission) Not one person had helped me bathe or care for my patients all night.   The manager just threw the paperwork at me and said lets go get your evaluation complete and I lost it.

All I got was a letter from the Chief Nursing officer stating that they looked into the situation and hoped I would find a better job elsewhere.  Now, I am having trouble getting hired.  I have only received high marks in nursing, graduated top of my class, was in medical clinic administration for 10 years, I am friendly and outgoing.  What does it take to get another job? I see the same refresher classes that other nurses mention,  I should mention that I have two states that I carry a license in, and never let them lapse.  I can't even get selected for the referesher classes!  Where is this shortage of nurses?  Evidently the recruiters are only picking new students.  Now that my spouse is unemployed due to the construction shutdown, I really need to go back to work and there are only eight nursing jobs available in my local hospitals due to the fact that we have a community college that pumps out new grads and "everyone gets hired" that passes the NCLEX.    I am now trying to move out of state, and have interviewed up their a couple of times and still can't get into refresher courses or moved into post partum. What is going on?     Maybe age discrimination?   I have never been on a WC injury, no claims, nothing.  Does anyone have a clue?
