Nursing is a tough job on a good day. I recently had a bad experience because I thought I could do case management telephonically. The people were as much in need as ever. Case managers really do see some difficult cases, but for me that is never the problem. I love helping people.

The problem was management. I was hired only six mths ago and in that short time after 15 yrs of nursing they managed to make me feel like a total loser. If they want to crunch numbers all day why hire a nurse in the first place? Hire a hatchet man. I need to get my confidence up because I have to start job hunting again and the taste in my mouth is bad. Like I said nursing is a tough job on a good day and I love it. I cant let the bullies win.

Nice post Lori. Not much amazes me these days.  The "professinal" world can be a cruel one.  I will graduate next year and I have already seen bitterness between nurses and people talking about one another behind their backs while doing my clinicals. SHAMEFUL.  I guess it doesn't matter what field you work in. There are always people to "shoot" you down and have themselves believe that they are the better person. I have no time for people like this. Good luck to you in your job search. I hope you land a position that you love and can use your skills well.

Yes number crunching seems to be the thing in todays nursing world and we do not have much of a say in it.  Last night due to a number crunching supervisor a nurse was told to have low census for the first 4 hours.  Then we got 7 admits before 11pm with no ward clerk and basically no charge nurse (she was doing the orders on the computer).  Then the super called the low census nurse and had her drive in (45 min) and we all had to give up a pt to her and then had admits again.  Some of us had three admits.  No wonder mistakes are made.  We felt as though our heads were spinning and how do you think our pts' felt when we had to say "Oh be right back I have an admit when we are not even done with thier history yet.  We also have pschy. pts', peds, restriants, dementia, alz, surgical......you name it it is there on my floor.......  We even had three pt go and return from surgery OH did I mention the tele pts'.  Geez I need to go to sleep.  Chat later gators.....  Gotta go back again tonight.

Case managment is a tough area. I could not do it. Do not be so hard on yourself and do not give them the power to make you feels so low.

I want to thank those of you that responded to me. I am recovering but I wish I had never taken the position to begin with. I started my job search and I find myself wanting to explain, but what is there to explain it just wasnt for me. Wish me luck with something different.
