Posted 5 months ago Hello- Is anyone else an ICU nurse? What certifications do u have? I'm interested in obtaining more certifications, but not sure where to start. (I have BLS;arrthymia,ACLS, hemodynamics class, and soon will do critical care class.) But I'm interested in obtaining more, then what my place requires. Any suggestions?

| Posted 3 months ago Hey, Sounds like you have quite alot of the basic certifications right now..........all you have to do now is go do it! After you obtain the experience, along with the cerifications you already have you probably will have a good idea if there is some other type of certification you want to receive. Like your CCRN, Critical Care Nursing License, or perhaps others. Infection control.......ecucation......and now that industrious informatics lurking over our heads as nurses. So, relax.......you have the certs to begin and experience the hectic choice of ICU. :) Take Care..............Crafty R.N. |

| Posted 2 months ago I think Craftdollhouse has mentioned most of it already, I will list down what "Kanna" already has and add to it. 1. BLS 2. ACLS 3. a Basic 12 lead ECG class would be nice but optional 4. hemodynamics 5. Along with hemodynamics. Get your IABP certification. IABP certification again is optional. They will offer that to you in CCU. Maybe in ICU. I've worked in hospitals where the ICU nurses dont take care of balloon pump patients, just the CCU/SHU RNS are allowed to care for them. 6. Critical Care Classes- they usually meet 2x/week for 12 weeks, I believe. If you get hired in the ICU, most likely they will pay for you to take these classes. They usually cost about $1000.00 or prob. more. 7. CRRT or CONTINUOUS RENAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY (CRRT), many hospitals require their nurses to be able to take care of their patients who require dialysis but too unstable to dialyse; so they opt to do this. They will also offer this in ICU. If you intend to go that route immediately, don't bother paying for it with your own money. The hospital will train you . I dont know your experience, but primarily, the above topics are enough to occupy you. You have to be ever vigilant of your patient's condition and change in condition. Patient and family teaching is extremely important because most of the family and patients are still in shock and denial ---teaching and re-enforcement. Be a patient advocate more than ever. Most of the patients are intubated and cannot communicate. You're going to be their representative. Hope that helps. Good Luck,
