Here is my dilemma

Posted 5 months ago So I am not quite management at work but not just a regular either. I am in charge of all vacations and schedules for 100 people. I do the schedules for nurses, secretaries, Medics and techs. I also approve their vacations. So here is my dilemma. One of the girls has a party in July every year. One of the techs- who has requested to be on the weekend program is invited and so am I. Anyways she wrote me a letter stating that she needed to change her hours on the day of said party (Saturday), and she also would need 4 hours off- but she did not want to take it as her free weekend. Well the schedule is already out and there is already someone working the shift she wants. So I told her that she would need to find someone to switch with her and then pick up that extra 4 hours she wants off. Well anyways I know she will not be able to get the switch she wants because one person absolutely needs to work the time scheduled and the other will never switch with anyone. So I know she is going to call off that day and come to the party. Now I am going to be at the party and that is going to put me in a position since she has requested the day off to me and I turned her down. If I tell I am a tattle tale but if I don't will my boss trust me? I am interested in opinions. |

| Posted 5 months ago In a non-threatening way I would advise the said person that will probably call in, that you will also be at the party. You might offer to help her to find someone that would trade the day with her. If you have a float pool or PRN pool, she might try contacting some of them and see if they would be willing to help her out. I sure would not put the trust that your boss has in you on the line. I don't know that you have to tell the boss that the person was there but I know I wouldn't lie if asked directly. Good luck. |

| Posted 5 months ago Here's another way. Take the vacation day request to your boss with the schedule and explain you have no way to give this person the day off requested and the request came in after the schedule was posted. Then tell your boss what you told this person, about finding someone to switch and make up the fours she wants off. Your boss is very aware there is a party on the requested day, so let the boss handle this situation not you. Deb

Thanks but we don't have a prn pool we are a closed unit. She has said over and over that she has to work 8 of those hours she can not afford to be off the whole day. She signed up to work every Sat/Sun with one free weekend every quarter. One rule is to have your free weekend request in before that month's schedule comes out. She is also does not want to take the free weekend anyways. Basically she is stuck and is going to have to work. She knows that I am going to be at that party- I am there every year- although there were a couple of times that I had to work and could only attend for about 2 hours. |

That is probably what I shoud do. I have normally told people when I can not grant them a day off or a vacation because of the guidelines that they are always welcome to go over my head and have the boss approve it. I never mind if they do this because I have certain criteria I have to follow and if she (boss) wants to go outside the guidelines she can- she normally doesn' t though. I also usually try to find another day or date that is acceptable for what they want to do if I at all can. Thanks |

| Posted 5 months ago So I talked to my boss today and went over all the people I could not give vacations. I also discussed what this girl wanted so now she knows and if this girl calls off I don't have to worry she will already know she wanted it off. |
