Hi Charlita.  I think there may be a point in some of our (female) lives where we need to go through something to become balanced.  I may be off track but, my mother-in-law had a hysterectomy YEARS ago.  I didn't know it til she told me herself.  I think that may explain why she goes through mood swings even now still; maybe the hysterectomy made her even more imbalanced, perhaps?  Anyway, it's obvious that you're loveable here on nursinglink.  How do you think you hold up around loved ones esp. if you're under stress?  Hopefully  my words did not offend you in anyway.  Please correct me if I am wrong in any of this.

DON'T TAKE PREMARIN!!!!! At least not for long. My grandma was on it for 20 years (!!!!!) to help strengthen her bones and her PCP now is almost certain that it caused the breast CA that she is now battling. It's ridiculous for her GYN to have insisted that she take the Premarin for that reason, especially for so long.

I wouldn't take premarin because of the animal cruelty involved.  Now, supporting evidence is loss of bone mass, certain types of cancers, etc.  However, I still stand on the point of animal cruelty.  Premarin stands for pregnant mares urine, where they obtain the hormones.

to reply to this and other comments.

I would always recommend HRT to anyone undergoing the rigors of menapause. When you lack the necessary Hormones to generate new cells. You feel awful and weak. Hormones h=keep the body in balance to provide well being and homeostasis. The problem is that they all slow down at different rates......Causing unbalance.

Recomendation: Get in touch with a certified Endocrinologist and Start research for who to give your services to....Finding the right specialist will make all the difference in your well being. The right Doctor will keep a tracking log of all your hormone levels at least every 3 monthes. and adjust your dosages as needed. Because as stated above. Your hormones change at different rates. this can all be measured by blood samples. and the necessary algorithm will be set forth by your doctor to create your daily dosage and regimen.

Also to comment on emtpixie's comment. There is no TRUE link between HRT and cancer. Studies show this to be true. Even if it were. All of us wouldn't have made it past puberty alive.....

EliteRN: I'm not trying to start a debate here, but I never said I didn't agree with HRT. There are HRT drugs other than Premarin. Not to mention the holistic approaches that DON'T include RX drugs. Also, I don't quite understand your comment about us not making it past puberty alive.

dmazment: WOW! I never knew about the horse urine in meds. Not only is it cruel to the animal (as I'm sure they don't wait for the horses to urinate on their own) it's just gross!

emtpixie  this is the problem, many nurses and other healthcare professionals do not know what premarin is, other than it's an HRT.

EliteRN....Being tired is the least of the problems with menopause.  It's the severe mood swings, the meaness, the change of personality, the hot flashed that made me feel I was living during my own private summer.  To give you an example, I went from finding most things amusing, to a crazy, emotionally overloaded witch, in what seemed like one day

I had a T shirt that said  "BEWARE MENOPAUSAL WOMAN!  the VOICES in my head are saying HURT! MAIM! KILL"

Once I started on Estrace, just a week later, I felt almost normal again.  It was either take HRT or completely lose what little mind I had left

thanks for all your responses.I have read so much on this and am very unsure if I want to try it. My doctor gave me samples of PremPro But looking at all the side effects, it scares me-high blood pressure, heart disease (both run in my family) breast cancer, blood clots (these two do not run in my family)  I'm at the point where I feel I do need something but am not sure the benefits outweigh the risks. I am pretty much over hot flashes, just once in a while. But I am moody, sad, irritable and plain crazy sometimes. My doctor suggested I try this for 2 monthes and see if it makes a difference. How long would I have to take it?

You did not offend me. I asked for your opinion. I don't do well under stress especially around my family. (And in my family, there's always stress!)  They all irritate me in different ways and at different times. They make me crazy!

I just read an article on this subject. I was interested since I am going on 43 years old and menopause is right around the corner. I think it is up to each individual. My mom has been on hormone replacment for over 30 years since her hysterectomy in her late thirties.. Recently she stopped taking the med and had a lot of emotional bouts with crying and some depression.  She went right back on them.

I do not wish a debate either. I have never tried Premarin. I have frequent access to the AMJ that support my post. Thats all.  What I meant by the puberty line.....is this.....

When we all hit puberty. All are crucial develomental Hormones are raging into high gear......With this as a fact. And if Cancer cell growth can be expedited by Hormones as you say......then puberty would be one hell of a time......Truly I was just being facesious here.....No harm.....Thanks for chatting....

That's great your mom went with hormone replacement after her hysterectomy...  My husband's mom never did take anything to balance herself out after her hysterectomy.  If a person did not know my mother-in-law her personally, she may come off as an extremely unhappy or depressed and all of those other negative feeling that we feel.  Only close friends and family members who know about her "procedure" may TRY to understand that she is 'chemically' imbalanced when she goes through her mood swings.
