Just wondering b/c I am a new graduate and I am having a hard time finding a job.  I have applied to every hospital and just about every position and I keep getting the "qualifications don't match their needs" response.  I am assuming it is b/c I do not have experience...but how am I suppose to get any experience if no one hires me.

Anyways...so I did have a Rehab hospital call me back for an interview.  I was looking at their website and the work seems really interesting.  I think I will like it.  So does anyone have any advice or enlightenment for me on being a rehabilitation nurse?

Ideally I wanted to start work in a hospital so I can gain experience, but that isn't working out.

I feel your pain, I've recently graduated and haven't got into a hospital yet. I have 27 years experience as an LPN in both acute care and LTC. I worked on an acute rehab unit for several years and it was rewarding...I am assuming rehab with PT, OT, SLP? It had very amazing moments, just when you thought someone was never going to recover they totally pull it through and walk off the unit. One kid (15yrs)we had was an infant, nobody was home.  He came back, walked back to the unit and told us that he went mountain climbing with his dad and they threw his wheel chair off of the mountain. I got a thank you card from a young fella with a picture of him going to his senior prom. This kid was thrown from a truck and the truck rolled and landed on top of him. He lived only because bystanders pushed the truck off of him. He had a very hard road and he did it.

Good luck on the job hunting, I don't know what the secret is. I spoke with a classmate today and she told me the hospital hardley hired any of our class.  Frustrating!!

I don't know where you all are located, but this is general advice.

Go to the largest teaching hospital in your area and apply.  Most teaching hosptals, have some type of new grad internship.

My advice would be to do at least a year of med/surg.

I appreciate the replies and advice.  I will be starting work at a rehabilitation hospital here in Jacksonville, Florida the begining of August.  The hospital has a really good reputation and I am excited.  I think I will enjoy it.  Here goes nothing.
