Hi,

I am a 50 year old woman who is considering nursing school. However, as you read in the subject line, math hates me. Im terrible at math. Should I just become a medical assistant and avoid nursing school simply because of numbers? What a shame but if thats the way it is, I will have to deal with that.

Thank you for your responses.

Absolutely go for it.  Perhaps you can get one on one help with Math from a tutor or your teacher.  Don't let it stop you

I am also anti-math...as I always say: numbers are EVIL!!! However, I hope you don't let math prevent you from becoming a nurse. I start my first Nursing classes next week & I'm not looking forward to the math that will be involved (med calculations). But as I understand it from other nurses, the math you will be using is something that will become second nature after repeated calculations.I am currently studying for my first med calc quiz that I'll be taking in 2 days at Nursing Orientation. Math has a tendency to leave my brain the minute I'm not using it. Sooooo, I will have to stay on top of it so as to shove it in my long-term memory!! Good luck to you & don't let math be the ruler of your life!!

Go for it.  There is so much help now on the web or tutors at school.  Good luck!

Believe me, Math hates me too.  I was never good at math and I was even in a RSP program in High School (resource specialist program, or as I like to call it, "Really stupid people") .  I have been doing pretty good at the math, believe it or not.  If I can do it anyone can.  I have used tutors and that helps alot.  Go for it!!

I severed diplomatic relations with Math in 1969, yet managed to go on and successfully complete a diploma in nursing, a BSN, and manage multi-million dollar budgets in Surgical Services. I never screwed up a medication calculation...which to me is the MOST important thing. Don't let a math issue stop you - there is tutoring, online help, peer and instructor support - take advantage of these things. If I can do it, so can you!

Go for it.  I've been told people who are really good at Math are not as creative and sensitive. Both of which are requirements for nursing.  Good luck.
