I am currently in an LPN program and will graduate in May then continue with my RN.  I have just begun the classes and my question is, can LPN's START IV's?  I know they can't push the first med, but will I have IV training in my LPN schooling and will I be able to start them when I am employed as an LPN?

it all depends on what your state licensure allows. In Ca, LVN's usually do not unless we get IV certification. That allows us to be able to start a perpherial IV and start basic IV fluids, it also allows us to start/co-check blood products as long as there is a supervising RN or higher.

Some of the hospitals will train LPN/LVN's to start IV's.  I graduated with my LPN in 1994 and started working at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.  They trained us to start IV's and then we were tested on medications that we could push.  They listed us as an LPN II.  It was like a graduate step.

The LVN who works aside with us is under Ca Law aloud to start peripheral iv;s and also hang blood with dubble check of the

RN. We have two LVN's working on the floor and they are very good in starting IV's.

In Florida you have to have your IV Certification in order to start IV's. After that you can start IV's, hang piggy backs maintance IV fluids do some limited iv pushes (depending on the facility)

I work as a Hospice nurse in NC.  I'm an LPN who is IV certified. I work for a company that allows LPN's to start IV's, hang meds and give IV pushes.  I know that is not the norm and in most states LPN's can not hang meds nor give IV pushes.

Yes in my state which is FL, most hospitals want the LPNs to be IV certified or willing to obtain it within a few months of hire.

In NC, LPN's are allowed to start IV's right out of nursing school. They no longer have to be seperately certified.

I am in TN and I can start IV's.  You will need to check the state in which a you are licensed.  It may require a seperate certification.

I live in Ohio.  When I went for my LPN 13 years ago after you graduated you could take a course and get iv certified.  I think that they are incorporating that in the schooling these days so the lpns come out iv certified.

In California, LVN's are not allowed to start IV's unless you get a certificate.  Look at the local adult schools for a certiicate class.  It is usually cheap and convenient.
