Posted 3 months ago Is this right?
We have more citizens in jails and prisons than in any other country in the world. We have more than 1 out of 100 adults of our population locked up. Yes, that comes out to 5% of our population is incarcerated at any given time.
Of those who are incarcerated, more than half will return to jail/prison.
Sadly, many are mentally ill.

| Posted 3 months ago also, are you all aware that since the "war on drugs" our women's prison population tripled? again, proof that addictions are viewed as a maoral failing and needs to be punished, not treated. Ginny |

| Posted 3 months ago CD we talked about this in our abnormal class today. Yes, it is a fact that most are mentally ill, society just doesn't know how to cope with this, and sadly, rehabilitation...well..... |

| Posted 3 months ago There's no war on drugs. Without drugs, legal or otherwise, some of the population would actually be able to think for themselves. Can't have that. Can't have treatment, either. Too much money. Easier to warehouse them. Why? Out of sight, out of mind. Can't take care of our own because we're too damn busy nurturing idiots who want to come over here and decapitate us, vaporize us, starve us, pick one or make up your own. Keep the lemmings drugged enough so when the time comes, they will go over the cliff without any prompting. Not everyone in jail is a career criminal. Some want help and would accept it if it was offered. When did a profit become more important than a person's life? A Proud Redneck Lovin' the Country Life |

| Posted 3 months ago laura: very insightful post. It is much cheaper to house the mentally ill in jails than to have the hospitals re-open or to have more outpatient clinics in place.Just lock theri ass up, that's what they need. Let's get tough on crime. Right, Lock up the guy we know has mental illness becuse he may bother the tourists. At least he is fed and out of the elements. Does not matter that locking him up in a cell with no stimulation will make him sicker. Ginny |

| Posted 3 months ago Ginny, I am sick to death of the drivel on the "news" that is force fed to us 24/7. We are actually expected to buy into this crap and dutifully agree to it. Exactly how many meds are prescribed that really do any good? How many chemicals can the human body ingest and survive as a contribution to society? Drug dealers don't have as much business as they used to because young people can just go to their in home medicine cabinet and pick and choose for free. The sad thing is that for every person who cares, there are probably 100 who don't. There was a woman not long ago (real deal) who was listing all the meds she was on and then smiled and said her doctor had also told her she had RLS. She was HAPPY about her drugs. What's the deal here? If she, as an adult, has nothing more in her life to be glad about than a drug list, what can the kids coming up use for an example? There are definitely kids who don't live this way, but they get lost in the shuffle because of the ones who don't have a chance. Drugs will screw your mind up permanently. There are drugs that are useful for a limited time, but I can't see taking something because you're upset, stressed, or sleepy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I cannot recall a time before now when children, teens, young adults were ever so used, abused or exploited. They are not disposable. | Posted 3 months ago we are very quick to use meds on the mentally ill with out counseling, therapy or even a good explanation of their illness and treatment options.....never saw anyone CURED by ativan or xanax...I do understand the need for APPROPRIATE medication but is not the whole answer any more than insulin therapy cures diabetes.

| Posted 3 months ago Ghandi said "be the change you want to see in the world"... if the children of messed up people don't see any other way to live they don't know they have a choice. This needs to come from the schools, the community , and from EACH and EVERY ONE OF US. My challenge to each of you is what are YOU doing about it??

| Posted 3 months ago Is this right? Our children have had God forcibly taken from them at school and all school functions yet if they do wrong and are locked in jail or worse sent to prison THEN they are given a Bible. Vote McCain/Palin in November |

| Posted 3 months ago So very sad. I agree with the Bible thought. Why don't we give them a bible before they get locked up A good man loves God and lives well....but

| Posted about 1 month ago I do not know how we as society have gotten to where we are now but here is how I see 'that' place. We live in a society that teaches people #1. (of all ages) a ""pill"" will fix whatever is wrong with you....so everyone has to have the ""pills"".#2. We are not responsible for our own actions, you know , so-in-so 'told' me too, or everone is doing that type answer...#3.why should I work and make minimum wage when with all of my kids I can make more money staying home and taking care of my kids (hahaha) from the government. I will say a few actually do take care of their kids....not many tho. #4.Then the idea I can make fast easy money selling drugs and if I get caught "Oh well" I can just stay in prison a while (again) and not work at all !! At our state prison in the Delta of Arkansas we have several thousand acres of cotten and other crops and our inmates when they first come to our unit have to work on the "hoe crew" if they are physically able . I do the intakes and you should here the stories they spin trying to get out of working in the fields!! I tell some of them that I have raised kids and have a "B.S." detector built in and it is on all the time ! |
