Sorry to hear about that. Cheer up - I'm sure you can improve your math scores. Are you working to get into an RN program? Maybe you could try working as a CNA or LPN first to see if you like it.

There are many math courses that you can take if your math is in fact low. I was poor in math and made it. I took one class at a time to get over the math hurdle. Truth of the matter is, you do not use that much math in nursing. I still cannot understand why I was forced to take all of that stinkin' algebra and statisti Do not give up.

Thanks for the feedbacks, I dont think I can repeat the course but Im definitly not going to give up Im really trying to go for my RN but I have to get my LPN first so Im definitly continuing for that and see where it takes me. I know for a fact thers not that much math to be done once in hired in whatever position I go for but its definitly a requirement for me. Im just really scared about not getting into the nursing program. Im not letting anyone tell me any different hopefully its not a mistake since Im paying for all my classes myself. Thanks again~

It will not be a mistake. We need more nurses like you. Those who want to be in the field not becuase "You can always get a job" or because "You can make a lot of money" (what a myth that is) but because it is what you want to do.

Hay, we've all been discouraged at one time or another. What's that old saying? If you fall, pick yourself up and try again.

Just remember that anything you want does not come easy you have to fight for it. I have had problems with math in the past and sometimes I still find myself VERY confused but I am determined to become a nurse no matter what It has been my dream for a long time and I am doing it so can you.

That's a great saying phunaries. You really have to live by it. A person has to fail before they can succeed.

There are also probably plenty of refresher courses that you could take to brush up on your math skills. Good luck - you'll be a great nurse someday!!

I haven't took algebra in 4 years. I am so rusty. I bought me a prealgebra CD rom and installed onto my computer. I know the math will be my problem, when I take the nursing entrance test.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

II too have gone back to school. I became an LPN thirty years ago. I am now going for my RN. Because I went to school so many years ago I have to take all the basics over again. My college (in Maine) offers a seminar in Math, English so that its students can be successful. You can take any class over again, as long as you pay for it. See your advisor and do not let one person tell you you can't. When in high school my guidance counselor told me to forget college and just get married. Because my foster family believed in me, and I was determined to be a nurse, I was able to succed. Good luck

Try and try again. It's very hard to live by, I know. But if each and everyone of us think of our daily lives, and what we go through on a daily basis, that alone should tell you were all achievers everyday of our lives. Now can I get an AMEN?!

If you want to be a nurse go for it. Don't let anyone convince you that you can't do it. I never do. I went to school for nursing and the math part at first looked hard. I said I am going to do this and I did. I asked for help and I made it and scored high on the State Board. I always wanted to be a Nurse.

Amen to that phunaries. As long as you keep trying and really want to do it you can. You have to have full faith in yourself. As many people as you know could back you 100% but if you still do not fully believe in yourself it will make it harder on you. Take a moment and really really convince yourself you can do it. You can do anything you want to as long as you try.

That counselor should be shot! I am terrible in math and I have been a nurse for over 30 years. Take some extra basic math courses and try to bring up that grade. ANYONE who wants to be a nurse should be in my book! We are facing a serioius shortage of nurses!

Glad to hear all the positive encouragement you've received! If your dream is to be a nurse, never let anything or anyone dissuade you. You CAN do it. Maybe that counselor doesn't really understand the lack of practical application of math skills nurses use in their work. When I took the entrance exam for nursing school, I hadn't been in an algebra class for about 20 years. I remembered learning it in school as a teenager, but since I hadn't used it once in all those years, I didn't answer ONE question! I skipped the whole section on the entrance exam. I still got accepted to nursing school and was made to take a remedial algegbra class my first semester. It made me so mad that I had to spend money to re-learn what I learned as a teenager, that I refused to pay attention for about half the semester. Well that was silly of me. At the halfway point, I started going once a week for a private tutoring session from the professor to make sure I caught up and passed the class, which I did. From then on, I've never had any trouble with any math in nursing. If you go on to get a BSN, you'll need a statistics course, but you can sit state boards and work as an RN without a BSN in lots of places. Even if you end up in a 4 year program wihich requires statistics, (which is a good thing!), that sort of math is fairly logical once you get the hang of it. You can get help with that too, and remember, unless you go on to a master's degree or go into nursing research, you will definitely NEVER encounter any statistics math needs in your nursing practice. Any counselor who uses the word "should," with a client needs to go back to school and learn the basics of counseling. In counseling, good counselors know better than to lay their own evaluations, or judgements or opinions onto somebody. A good counselor simply hepls guide people to their own decisions by pointing out options, obstacles, solutions, consequenses. Perhaps that counselor should have been listening when you said nursing is your passion. How happy would you be in life if you gave up on your passion just because one person didn' t have the insight, or professional capacity to help you acheive your goals? You go girl! And don't let anything or anyone bring you down! We want you to go for it and succeed. If you need help with math questions, you can always post them here and all of us will help you

That's what is wonderful about nurses' as a whole they ralley around a person for support, and I am so glad that's what you have recieved Yary216. I had to switch schools because I did not get the support and the extra help I needed to get in the nursing program. My passion is also Nursing. I feel exactly the same why you do. But, I am continuing on. I am glad that you are too. Don't ever let anyone tell you can't achieve your goal. Your school should have turoring for free. Good Luck to you.

YARY216---- STICK WITH IT..... DONT LET ANYONE, I MEAN ANYONE DICOURAGE YOU FROM BECOMING WHAT YOU WANT TO BE...... IF MATH IS THE PROBLEM, THE COUNSELOR SHOULD BE HELPING YOU WITH THAT, AND NOT DISCOURAGING YOU..... OR AT LEAST POINTING YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO MENDING THAT PROBLEM....GOOD LUCK AND STICK WITH IT

this is directed to anyone who has/ have this problem: go forth with what you want to do..... dont ever let anyone or anything misguide you or dicourage you in any way.....i respect anyone who has the courage to step up to the plate(of nursing) and want to become a nurse........ the training is somewhat difficult, but the things we want in life that are respectable aren't easy to achieve...... but when the time comes and the training is over, the reward is so much greater and out-wieghs everything else. It takes a dedicated person to become a nurse. the money is good, but the reward of helping people (to me) is greater

Yary216, Make sure you go see that counselor when you graduate. Better yet send him an invitation, if he has any class he might get you a gift. :)

Hang in there. Don`t ever let anyone tell you, you can`t do something. Keep focused, and keep your eye on the prize, and be very perservering. I was. It took me twice to make it through nursing school, but I did, and I have been a nurse (RN) for 23 years. I have been told because I have had such a variety of experiences, that I `m very marketable now. I feel like you have to be "tougher than nails" to be a nurse, but you also need to be understanding, and empathetic.Good luck to anyone who is trying to get into nursing school, and who is already in school. Don`t look back, but look forward to a career that is rewarding, and has many different areas to practice in, as well as fairly good pay, depending on where you decide to practice.

My sister was told to look for a new major by one of her instructors when she was in nursing school. She's been a nurse, a damn good one at that, for over 20 years.

I was told by a career counselor that, oftentimes, people who have the compassion and humanistic spirit to treat their patients with dignity and respect and good humor (basically, the people who would become the best health care employees) often do not because of the math/science requirements. I'm terrible at math myself (and have to WORK MY ASS OFF to get decent grades because I think it's so hard), but hope to persevere because I know that I'd make a damn good nurse once I get that basic stuff down. Hang in there, and don't let other people tell you otherwise.

Yari. If you haven't been able to get a tutor, you may want t check your library online services. My library has a link called LearningExpressLibrary.com (http://www.learnatest.com/LearningExpressLibrary/Home.cfm?CFID=x&CFTOKEN=x&Refresh=1&sip=-993683120&HR=http://www.piscatawaylibrary.org/).
According to the site, "LearningExpress Library is a comprehensive, interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help patrons—students and adult learners—succeed on the academic or licensing tests they must pass. You'll get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results. Click on a category to the right so that you can start on your path to success right now."
Whatever you do though, don't give up your dream. Good luck!

Yeah, right now I'm taking a remedial algebra class to prepare me for the higher-level stuff, and am actually one of the smart kids! I got over 100% on my mid-term and have never been more proud of a test grade in my life. Just to say, keep going, keep trying, and you'll get there :)

Also, kendbeef has a good idea... there are tutors, and check websites online like RateMyProfessors.com to make sure you get a really good teacher.
