Posted about 1 month ago Hi everyone...I am a new graduate and will like to know which one these two places will be better for me to work at. Hospital or Nursing Home. Please give me your opinions because I have to decide very soon. Where will I get the most experience and also not be too stressed. Thanks! |

Posted about 1 month ago I would have to say you would get more experience in a hospital. I have worked in a hospital, but never worked in a nursing home. I understand the work load is larger in a nursing home, but your patients are sicker in a hospital. I would think you would get to use some of your skills as much in a nursing home. Good Luck

Posted about 1 month ago It depends on the nursing home, also. I work in a facility that has a 25 bed Transitional Care Unit (similar to a rehab unit) that can be extremely busy and educational and stressful. I have been a nurse for 25 years and some days it is constant running to keep up! That would be the wonderful world of nursing - at times! But, it is truly wonderful and I wish the best and hopefully 25 + years for you! I started out in the hospital, med -surg, but I think either now would be fine! You will definitely get your skills in a nursing home if you work for one that has a rehab unit. Good luck! Lisa

Posted about 1 month ago Thanks for this topic. I will be going to school for the LVN prog. and I was wondering the same thing. I prefer the hospital. I guess the setting(louder than nursing homes)

Posted about 1 month ago I would advise you to work in a hospital first. You will gather a wealth of knowledge and experiences. Yes, you will get expereince in a nursing home, but, I believe that a hospital will give you a better base of experience and knowledge expansion of various types of diseases, and illness. Which in turn if you decide later down the line to go work at a nursing home or long care facility will be helpful in evaluating the residents health status changes. Not to say that you will not be stressed, because you will be. After all, you will be a new nurse in whichever setting you choose. No matter what you choose, make sure that you get enough orientation with a preceptor who cares! Best of success to you! Patty

Posted about 1 month ago Med surg is always a good place to start as a new grad. A nursing home is fine too. You may not get the technical skills ie IV, lab draws that you would get in a hospital but your assessment skills must be top notch considering you dont have all the diagnostic equipment at your disposal like in the hospital. The other good thing about nursing homes is you pick up alot of speed and learn meds quickly. In a hospital depending on the state you will have 6-8 patients where in a nursing home you will have at least 30 and each person is on at least 10-15 drugs, half are diabetic and there is always a good wound to dress. After working in the nursing home I found med surg floor nursing very boring. I would look around and see what I like the best. Good luck where ever you go we need nurses who are willing to work everywhere!!!!!
