Office of the National Nurse

Posted 12 months ago The National Nursing Network Organization has been working to establish an Office of a National Nurse to complement the work of the U.S. Surgeon General. They are also working on building a network of volunteer teams of nurses and other health professionals who will promote, encourage, and support nationwide efforts that focus on wellness and disease prevention. What does the NursingLink community think about this? Can we benefit from having a National Nurse? |

| Posted 8 months ago In my opinion, the country can benefit from having an office with a National Nurse. This country spends more than 15% of it's GNP on healthcare; with 95 percent of those dollars being used to treat PREVENTABLE illnesses. The Office of a National Nurse would largely work with the American public to teach them wellness behaviors and strategies, focusing more on prevention. Spending millions of dollars to treat an often very preventable illness after complications have arisen (type 2 diabetes comes to mind) strikes me much like closing the barn door AFTER the horse has escaped. I'm all for the Office of a National Nurse: www.nationalnurse.org teamRN |

| Posted 3 months ago Having a National Nurse just makes sense! Nurses are the most trusted profession...the largest segment of the US healthcare workforce...crossing all cultural communities... and nurses are often the first to be called up for "surge capacity" in almost every situation...even nurses in highly specialized areas of practice can revert to being "utility players" when the situation requires it... There are accomplished nurse leaders throughout our governmental structure... in the military, in HHS and the US Public Health Service...as well as in academic and clinical settings across the nation... nurses are undervalued and under represented.. as is evident is the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee for Healthy People 2020... look at the posted membership... NOT ONE NURSE!! What is wrong with this picture.... It is perplexing that Dr. Fielding... with his excellent Public Health department in Los Angeles dependent on his network of dedicated public health nurses at it's core...would not insist on having his capable nurse "partners" represented on this Advisory Committee. The growing grassroots movement to establish an Office of the National Nurse for prevention (www.nationalnurse.org) is certainly a model worthy of this committee's consideration. Nurses are busy... but just as our heroic nursing role models of the past made time to work for reform, today's nurses will continue this tradition. Support efforts for the National Nurse!! |
