A recent news article, New nursing residency program with shorter, more rigorous training" discusses a new condensed nursing residency program being launched in Texas. I was wondering if similar programs are being developed in other areas of the country, or internationally? If so, does an 18 week program suffice?

News of another hospital which is implementing a rigorous 18-week residency program. I'm interested to see what people think about these new condensed programs? Has anyone been through one?

I THINK YOU NEED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. THE MORE TRAINING THE BETTER. SOME HOSPITALS DO IT FOR ONLY 8 WEEKS. THE LONGEST I HAVE HEARD IS A 12 WEEK ONE-THAT IS IN MAY BE A SPECIALTY AREA. sO DO IT. I BELIEVE IT WILL BE OF AN ADVANTAGE TO YOU AFTER YOU ARE LEFT TO DO THINGS BY YOURSELF-I MEAN WHEN YOU START WORKING INDEPENDENTLY, YOU WILL BE MORE CONFIDENT.

Providence Medford Medical Center offers an 18 month Nurse In Residency program which I am 7 months into. It has been fabulous! The old wives tale that "Nurses eat their young" does not hold true at this hospital. I have felt nurtured and supported as a new grad. They have classroom time, as well as regular "pull back" sessions that allow us to vent, ask questions, and offer suggestions. This hospital has made me feel valuable and respected, and I have learned so much as a telemetry nurse.

The length of the program is important. The support you receive afterward is more important. A new option that you will probably be seeing more of is hospitals with orientation units. The entire staff is committed to training new nurses. Nurse patient ratios are less and a unit of this type attracts nurses who excel at precepting.
