A few discussions were started on here about safety issues. One of the suggestions was that the NL staff should verify that members are licensed nurses or nursing students before granting full access to the site. Do you agree with this?

It seems like a good idea, but how can we be sure our info wont be accidently given out, or recieved as a result of solfware glich or hackers.  Also, I would hope it wouldn't keep students off the site.  Now I have seen people on here who fish for medical care, also we had a jerk being a jerk...............they called him/her a troll because he/she said inappropriate stuff on threads to include racial slurs.  Id like to see the jerks off.  Sounds ok, but I'm cautious.

The things you can do to keep yourself safe online, is never give out personal information.  Don't put your personal zip code, choose a different one, don't use your own name.  I see several here who use their first and last names.  Change this and make up a nick.

I tired to edit my personal info but couldn't do it.  Some stuff you can change, but I couldn't get my last name or city off.  I sent a message to "Editor"  to ask how, and never heard back.  Does any one know how to edit that info?

My name came off without any problem, however the only way I could change the city was to change the zip code.

I would like to see some VERIFICATION done on this site to prove that you are a nurse or nursing student.

The information would go to NL staff only and noone on here would have a way to get to it. It would not keep students away. They only need to send to NL proof they are a student.

I think it is a good idea, one of the medical sites I also belong to is owned and run by doctors, in order to be accepted you must be an RN or higher than that in Medicine, you first give your lic number and they verify it and then you are accepted.  This would prevent stalkers or the few weirdos we have had here show up and end the solicitors that have tried to get in, although we nipped them in the bud, but it would work, not sure if this site is set up to do that though. I am just not sure with the students it would work out because who is to say the paper proof is real? And who on NL wants to be in charge of trying to verify if a document was real or fake?  It can be created as we have all seen on the net, anything can be photo shopped and the schools are NOT allowed to give out or verify admission to school, so I think this would be a problem for THAT reason, we do not want to limit our nursing student s from participating in this site. It would be nice if the profile was more accurate when you set up your account, people putting in they are RN with BSN then they are still students, who is to say they would ever finish school, it is just confusing. Your service should be student, then you could put what you are in school for: RN, LVN, CNA etc. that would be my input for whatever it is worth.

I omitted a lot from my profile page because I was approached by several members that are verrrrry strange. I wanted to post photos , but did not for the same reason. I am not yet a nurse OR even a student yet, but well on my way to becoming a student, so please don't exclude non students. I learn so much from you guys.Thank You All !!!

Will someone please message me and tell me how to get the city off completely? I tried changing the area code but the city never changed. I took off everything else.

I still can't get the city to change. I am considering deleting my account and starting over.

Go to "MY Profile" Then Click "Edit" Type in the new zip code. Do not forget to go to the bottom of the page and click "Submit" I bet that is the step you are missing.

I think I got my info to change to "viewable by friends only".  I see many of the posters are on my friends list.  If any one isn't would you please do me a huge favor and go to my profile and see if any of my info is still coming up?

Thanks

P.S. changing the zip code will change the city, but I really would like to get my last name off, and it keeps saying incomplete info and won't let me submit.

The question that keeps nagging at me when I see this topic is who will protect us from ourselves?
If you read some of the fights among members as the last elections approached, you know we can be a hostile and petty group.

Something else bothers me about submitting personal information to the site. There's a saying that's been circulating among web sponsors--"if you haven't been hacked yet, you haven't been on very long." You'll still find hackers whose purpose is to disrupt or vandalize a sight, but for years, the trend among hackers has been to violate a site for financial gain.

Several responsible parties have already warned me to be very careful about handing out my license number to others, and also how to go about it. If I recall, my state board of nursing's web site displays a similar warning.

Also, it's long been incredibly easy to gain access to a web site's files--without having to hack them. An expert on the matter told our computer networking class that about all that an intruder needs to gain full access to a network is to attach a item he can buy for about ten dollars at Radio Shack onto a network cable.
Whoa la--the intruder is in.
There's yet another common way for intruders to gain access to a network. Keepers of the site may occasionally use cell phones to gain access to their site for various reasons, including convenience. And once someone opens a channel using a cell phone, practically anyone with some specialized electronics can intercept the transmission.
Whoa la--they're in. About 4 years ago, a Cleveland State University professor drove around Cleveland monitoring those signals and found the practice so common, they practically constituted noise on his electronics. Evidently, many keepers of networks in Cleveland didn't realize they were exposing their sites to intruders, or they didn't believe their self-indulgence would cause any harm.

I wonder if there is a way to make it so that you can only view a person's info if they have asked to be a "friend", I try to be very careful who I let on my list, but you can still everyone's info even if you haven't accepted them.
