My friends have always given me a hard time because I take my PDA with me wherever I go, but I have found that it has helped me while at work and possibly saved a patient's life. I have a program installed on my PDA called PEPID RN, I first got it while in nursing school because it was a required item for a course. I'm so glad I got a chance to use it because it has the information that I don't use every day and I can't possibly remember everything about every condition or situation that walks through the door of the ER. I found out after my class was over that the program was actually written by nurses - which is nice because nurses and tech people definitely don't think alike! We had a situation in which a baby was brought in because he was having seizures - a very scary situation that I had NEVER seen before, and hope to never see again. Thanks to my PDA, I was able to access information on how to handle the situation - b/c we don't deal with this stuff we don't always know how to handle it. Thankfully, the baby was okay and we were able to help him. More and more doctors have PDAs and medical software, but it can definitely help nurses care for patients better and improve accuracy.

PEPID RN sounds like an excellent product. Perhaps you could review it in the Product Review section. Has anyone else had positive or negative experiences with PDAs as a nurse?

As a new grad, I started out with a PDA but I never used it. In my unit there are computer terminals at every bedside and scattered throughout the unit, and I use these to access any clinical info I need (drug guides, disease info, etc.)

I'm new to the website and didn't realize there is a product review section, after glancing at it, I have used a few of the books and will have to start reviewing.

Milah - Did you know you can even add your own products? You should add the PDA that you use. Send me a message if you need help.

I use my PDA ,or my brainaddon as I call ,it quite often and yes in Geriatrics it does come in handy. I got mine while in school too. During clinicals when you needed the side effects of a drug, toting around the Davis drug manual was well too much to say the least. My fav is the Midnight Medicine and 5-munite consult. Both offered by Unbound Medicine. The latter has ICD-9 codes...yeah baby.

I have the Palm OS with Skyscape's RN constellation pack installed. I absolutely love it! Having labs, nsg dx's, and Davis' Drug guide at my fingertips is great! I use it all the time.

What is the best software for the PDAs? I am going to get one for nursing school, but I don't know Palm OS or the other version. And all the software... any advice?

My husband just bought one, we are waiting for it to arrive. He got one that's suppose to work on the wireless network at home, I'm not sure what model or type yet...but once I know I'll let you know how I like it. I'm hoping it'll get here before next week clinicals start. My honey is first semester and I'm almost done in the program, so he can take it over...if I let him.
