Posted 6 months ago I have recently switched from being an NICU nurse to an adult ICU nurse. A patient of mine was severely oliguric and I suggested low-dose dopamine to the resident. He wasn't sure and asked the attending. He was ripped a new one for even suggesting that because "it isn't effective". I have used dopamine MANY times with neonates for oliguira and had great results, but I'm not sure if it does or doesn't work with adults. I know their physiology is different, but the mechanism is the same. It SHOULD work. Anybody have any suggestions? |

| Posted 6 months ago I know it used to be something like 2mcg/kg/min for that purpose, but when I was studying that, it was over 20 years ago. Perhaps there are better drugs for that purpose now, or maybe the attending just didn't know. It should be in the PDR. |

| Posted 2 months ago Up to 5mcg/kg/min used to be referred to as the "renal dose". I had heard several years ago this wasn't the case anymore, but can't remember the source. I don't see it used for this purpose in the ED, but couldn't tell you what goes on in the ICU's. |

| Posted 2 months ago Renal dose for Dopamine is classified as 2-5mcg/kg/min; but it doesn't work. Depending on what the Renal dysfunction is ... Pre-Renal or post, you'd probably get a more positive effect for Pre-renal dysfunction from IV diuretics. |
